Recent improvements in diplomatic relations between India and China, along with the resumption of direct flights and simplified visa procedures, have reignited interest among Indian students in pursuing higher education in Chinese universities. Education consultancies report a notable increase in inquiries and potential enrollments for the upcoming academic sessions.
Traditionally, Indian students have favored Chinese institutions for medical studies due to affordable tuition and quality education. This trend is expected to continue, with a significant number of medical aspirants considering China as a viable option. Additionally, there is a growing interest in engineering and artificial intelligence (AI) programs. The recent emergence of Chinese startup Deepseek in the AI sector has further fueled this enthusiasm.
Akshay Chaturvedi, founder of LeverageEdu, noted, “Engineering and technology students also show interest, particularly in areas like AI and robotics where China is a global leader; now more so with the rise of Deepseek.” He highlighted a remarkable 500% increase in queries about AI courses in China on their platform recently.
Rahul Subramaniam, co-founder of Athena Education, observed that engineering students are particularly drawn to prestigious institutions such as Peking University and Tsinghua University, renowned for their exceptional engineering programs.
The resumption of direct flight services between India and China after a five-year hiatus is anticipated to further facilitate student mobility, making Chinese universities more accessible to Indian students.
As diplomatic ties strengthen and logistical barriers diminish, China is poised to become an increasingly attractive destination for Indian students seeking quality education in diverse fields.
