Police says 34 people from India were among the 53 people found crammed into a truck.
Police in North Macedonia said on Tuesday they had found 53 people crammed into a truck and arrested
the vehicle’s driver.
“The migrants _ 34 from India and 19 from Cuba _ were discovered during a routine control at a highway toll station near the northern town of Kumanovo late Monday,” Police said in a statement.
The 39-year-old truck driver, a Macedonian national, was arrested.
Officials believe the 53 people entered North Macedonia illegally from neighbouring Serbia. They have been transferred to a migrant shelter pending deportation back to Serbia.
This was the third group of migrants to have been found crossing the border over the past three weeks in North Macedonia, which was once the main route for migrants seeking to sneak into Europe.
COVID-19 pandemic and strict controls on the border with Greece over the past year has forced migrants to try alternative routes. Indian nationals have also been found waiting to cross the borders in Belarus.
