Indian-origin Councillor Sameer Pandey has been elected as the new Lord Mayor of the city of Parramatta Council in Sydney. This marks a significant milestone as Pandey becomes the first Lord Mayor of Indian origin in Parramatta’s history.
Sameer Pandey initially joined the City of Parramatta Council in September 2017 and later assumed the role of Deputy Lord Mayor in January 2022, as reported by the news outlet.
Expressing his gratitude, Pandey described it as a “privilege” to lead the council of one of Australia’s fastest-growing centres. He emphasised the city of Parramatta’s position as the geographical heart of Greater Sydney, highlighting its economic significance and reputation as an excellent place to reside.
In a statement released by the City of Parramatta, Sameer Pandey stated, “The City of Parramatta is the geographical heart of Greater Sydney and a major economic powerhouse as well as the best place in Sydney to live.”

The election follows Councillor Donna Davis MP stepping down from the position after being elected as the State Member for Parramatta. Davis will continue serving as a councillor until the next local government elections in September 2024.
According to the media release City of Parramatta, Sameer Pandey has been serving on the Council since 2017, representing the Parramatta Ward. In 2022, he made history as the first Deputy Lord Mayor of Parramatta from the Indian subcontinent. With a background in IT and as a small business owner, Cr Pandey is dedicated to meeting the needs of the community and local businesses.
He is also focused on positioning the City of Parramatta as a smart city, leveraging technology for its development and growth. Sameer Pandey faces several significant projects, including the redevelopment of the aquatic centre, town hall, and Riverside Theatre.
Pandey’s election coincides with the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Australia. PM Modi arrived in Sydney as part of his three-nation visit, having concluded his visit to Papua New Guinea. Upon his arrival, he was greeted by Australian High Commissioner to India Barry O’Farrell and other officials. During his visit, PM Modi is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
