India’s new High Commissioner to Australia, Manpreet Vohra, has arrived in Canberra.
Mr Vohra announced his arrival on Twitter.
“Thrilled to reach Canberra and begin my assignment as High Commissioner of India. My thanks to colleagues in Mexico, India and Australia who made this transition pleasant and provided vital guidance on the important Australia relationship,” he said on Twitter.
Mr Vohra was serving as India’s ambassador to Mexico before being appointed India’s High Commissioner to Australia in the first week of March.
He has taken over from Gitesh Sarma, who left Australia earlier this month.
Mr Vohra is taking over the position when Australia and India are redefining their relationship as comprehensive strategic partners against the backdrop of deteriorating relations with China.
He is an Indian Foreign Service officer of the 1988 batch. He has held assignments as India’s Ambassador to Afghanistan and Deputy High Commissioner in Pakistan.
He has served Missions in Hong Kong, China and Mongolia at the beginning of his career as a diplomat.
As a Chevening Scholar, Mr Vohra studied for a Certificate in Diplomatic Studies at the University of Oxford.
He was India’s Economic Counsellor in London (UK) and Deputy High Commissioner to Kenya, and Ambassador to Bolivia in 2012.
